Double Switch and Gang Switch Wiring Diagram

Hey, in this article, we are going to see the wiring diagram and connection procedure of the Double Switch and Gang Switch. A "double switch" is like having two separate switches side by side placed on the same plate. It's called different names in different places. In the United States and other NEC standard following regions, it might be called a "Double Rocker," "Duplex Toggle," "Dual Rocker," or "Combo Double Toggle Switch."

In Europe, the UK, and countries following IEC standards, a "double switch" is sometimes called a "Two Gang, One-Way switch." This means it's like having two switches together, and each switch can control something separately.

The word "Gang" just tells you how many switches are on the same plate. This plate might have buttons that you press, which are also called "Throw," "Rocker," or "Dimmer."

The word "Way" talks about how many different things you can control with each switch. For example, a "one-way" switch can just turn one thing on or off. A "two-way" switch can control one thing from two different places.

For instance, a "1-Gang, 1-Way switch" means there's one switch on the plate, and it can only turn one thing on or off, like a light.

A "2-Gang, 1-Way switch" means there are two switches on the plate, and they can only turn on or off two things, like two lights or one light and one fan. (refer to the below figures 05 and 06)

A "3-Gang, 1-Way switch" means there are three switches on the plate, and they can only turn on or off three things, like three lights or two lights and one fan.

A "2-Gang, 2-Way switch" means there are two switches on the plate, and they can control two things from two different places such as lights.

A "3-Gang, 2-Way switch" means there are three switches on the plate, and they can control three things from two different places such as lights. (refer to the below figure.07)

Double Switch (NEC) or 2-Gang, 1-Way Switch (IEC) Terminals

Here in the below figure, we have shown the construction and terminals of Double Switch and 2-Gang, 1-Way Switch.

Double Switch (NEC) or 2-Gang, 1-Way Switch (IEC) Terminals

As, you can see in the above figure, the 2-gang, 1-way switch has two 1-way switches on the same plate. On the other hand, a Double switch has one common terminal and two load terminals (Load 1, Load2) which means it is the combination of two switches.

Here, you can see the wiring diagram, where a Ceiling Fan with inbuilt light is connected to a Double Switch.

Fan with Inbuilt Light Wiring Diagram and Connection with Double Switch

You can see the common terminal is connected to the hot or line terminal of the power source. The ceiling fan is connected to the upper side load terminal and the inbuilt light bulb is connected to the lower side load terminal. The input of both switches is connected to each other with the break-away fin tab. The upper side switch will control the fan and the bottom side switch will control the light.

You can see the common terminal is connected to the hot or line terminal of the power source. The ceiling fan is connected to the upper side load terminal and the inbuilt light bulb is connected to the lower side load terminal. The input of both switches is connected to each other with the break-away fin tab. The left side switch will control the fan and the right side switch will control the light.

Here, you can see the wiring diagram, where a Ceiling Fan and a light are connected to a 2-Gang, 1-Way Switch.

Two Separate Light and Fan Connection with 2-Gang, 1-Way Switch

You can see that one terminal of each switch is connected together and finally connected to the phase terminal of the power source. The ceiling fan is connected to the right-side (looking from the backside) switch and the light is connected to the left-side switch. So the left side switch will control the Light and the right switch will control the ceiling fan.

3-Gang, 2-Way Switch Wiring Diagram

Here, you can see the wiring diagram, where two 3-gang, 2-way switches are used to control three lamps from two different places.

3-Gang, 2-Way Switch Wiring Diagram and Connection

Each individual switch in gang switch 1 is connected to the individual switches of gang switch 2 in such a way that normal two-way switches are connected with a lamp. For example, the left side 2-way switch of gang switch 1 is connected to the left side 2-way switch of gang switch 2 and bulb 1. The middle side 2-way switch of gang switch 1 is connected to the middle side 2-way switch of gang switch 2 and bulb 2. The right side 2-way switch of gang switch 1 is connected to the right side 2-way switch of gang switch 2 and bulb 3.
