DC Motor Speed Controller Circuit Diagram using IC 555
Hey, in this article, we are going to build a very simple DC Motor Speed Controller using IC 555. This circuit contains few components so you can easily build this circuit at your home. You can control the speed of a 9V or 12V DC Motor very smoothly. A DC motor speed controller circuit using the IC 555 timer is a popular and simple circuit design. We know the 555 timer IC is commonly used in various timer, pulse generation, and oscillator applications. To create a DC motor speed controller using the 555 timer, we can design a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) circuit. PWM is a technique used to control the average voltage supplied to the motor, thereby controlling its speed.

IC NE555: Here, the NE555 timer IC is the heart of this circuit. It's used in an astable mode to generate a PWM signal, which controls the speed of the DC motor by varying the duty cycle of the signal.
Transistor 2N2222: This transistor acts as a buffer to isolate the control voltage from the NE555 timer's output. It helps in amplifying the PWM signal and driving the more powerful transistor (2N3055) for controlling the motor.
Transistor 2N3055: This is a power transistor that is used as a switching element to control the motor's voltage. It handles the current and voltage required by the motor.
100K Potentiometer: The potentiometer is used to adjust the control voltage, which adjusts the duty cycle of the PWM signal generated by the NE555 timer. This control voltage determines the motor's speed.
1N914 and 1N4007 Diodes: These diodes are used for protection purposes. Diodes can be used to protect against back EMF (electromotive force) generated by the motor when it's turned off, which can cause voltage spikes that might damage components.
2.2 Kilo-ohm, 1/4 watt resistor: These resistors are used for biasing and voltage division for the IC 555 input circuit.
1 Kilo-ohm and 1.5 kilo-ohm Resistor: These resistors are used for voltage division and current limitation purposes at the IC 555 output circuit.
Ceramic Capacitors: The 1uF ceramic capacitor is used to build the RC network to determine the frequency of the IC 555 timer. And the 0.1uF capacitors are used for noise removal purposes.
9V-12V DC Motor: This is the motor you are controlling. The speed of the motor is regulated by adjusting the PWM signal generated by the circuit.
9V-12V DC Power Supply: This power supply provides the necessary voltage for the entire circuit and the motor.
