How to Use This Calculator?

To use the Wheatstone Bridge Calculator, follow the below steps:

Find Uknown Resistor:

1. First of all, enter the input voltage (Vin) in the "Enter Input Voltage" field and select the appropriate unit from the dropdown list next to it (V, mV, kV). If you don't have voltage then you can put it 1V.

2. Enter the value of R1 in the "Enter the value of R1" field and Select the unit (ohm, kohm, Mohm).

3. Enter the value of R2 in the "Enter the value of R2" field and select the unit (ohm, kohm, Mohm).

4. Enter the value of R3 in the "Enter the value of R3" field and Select the unit (ohm, kohm, Mohm).

5. Now, Click the "Calculate Unknown Resistance" button to compute the unknown resistance (Rx).

**If you have the bridge voltage (Vb) while calculating the unknown resistance value then enter it in the "Bridge Voltage" field and Select the unit (V, mV, kV). If you don't have then keep "0" as the default value.**

Calculate Bridge Voltage

If you have all four resistor values and want to calculate the voltage across the bridge then follow this procedure.

1. Enter the input voltage and select the respective unit.

2. Enter the value of R1, R2, R3 as described in the above procedure.

3. Now enter the value of R4 in the "Rx" field and Select the unit (ohm, kohm, Mohm).

4. Then, Click the "Calculate Bridge Voltage" button to compute the bridge voltage (Vb).

5. To reset the form, click the "Reset" button.

Calculate Any Resistor in the Bridge

Also, this calculator gives an additional function so you can use the "Calculate Any Resistor in the Bridge." (Here the calculator assumes the Wheatstone bridge is balanced). Follow the procedures,

1. Enter the known values of any three resistors (Resistor 1, Resistor 2, Resistor 3, or Resistor 4) in the respective input fields and Select the appropriate unit for each resistor.

2. Keep empty the unknown resistor field.

3. Now, Click the "Calculate" button to calculate the missing resistor value based on the entered values.

4. To reset the fields, click the "Reset" button.

Formula

Here are the formulas, the above calculator uses for calculation,

(For Unbalanced Wheatstone Bridge)

Unknown Bridge Voltage Vb = Vin * (Rx / (R3 + Rx) - R2 / (R1 + R2))

Unknown Resistance R4 or Rx = (R2 * R3 + R3 * (R1 + R2) * (Vb / Vin)) / (R1 - (R1 + R2) * (Vb / Vin))

(Calculate any resistor For Balanced Wheatstone Bridge)

Unknown resistor1 = (resistor3 / resistor4) * resistor2

Unknown resistor2 = (resistor4 / resistor3) * resistor1

Unknown resistor3 = (resistor1 / resistor2) * resistor4

Unknown resistor4 = (resistor2 / resistor1) * resistor3

What is the Balanced and Unbalanced Wheatstone Bridge?

Balanced Wheatstone Bridge:

A balanced Wheatstone bridge is like a scale that is perfectly balanced. In this case, the bridge is set up in such a way that when you have the right combination of resistances, the output (usually a needle on a meter) stays at zero or very close to zero. So in this case whatever put the input voltage the voltage will be equally balanced and the voltage across the bridge or output voltage will be very near to zero. It means that the known resistances are in the right proportion to the unknown resistances. This balanced condition allows for accurate measurement of the unknown resistances.

Unbalanced Wheatstone Bridge:

An unbalanced Wheatstone bridge is like a scale that is not perfectly balanced. In this case, the ratios of the known and unknown resistances are not equal. As a result, the output (the needle on the meter) shows a non-zero reading or the output voltage will be zero which indicates the bridge is not in balance. The value and direction of the reading can give us information about the difference between known and unknown resistances.
