How to Use This Calculator?
By following these steps, you can utilize the above Power Factor Calculator to determine the power factor and related values based on the provided inputs.
- Select the phase by choosing either "Single phase" or "Three phase" from the drop-down menu. This depends on the electrical system you are working with.
- Provide the real power in kilowatts (kW). Enter the value in the input box next to "Provide Real Power in KiloWatts."
- Provide the current in amperes (A). Enter the value in the input box next to "Provide Current in Amps."
- If you selected "Three phase" in step 1, you will see the "Select Voltage Type" option. Choose either "Line to line voltage" or "Line to neutral voltage" from the drop-down menu.
- Provide the voltage in volts (V). Enter the value in the input box next to "Provide Voltage in Volts."
- Provide the frequency in hertz (Hz). Enter the value in the input box next to "Provide Frequency in Hertz."
- Specify your desired power factor by entering a value between 0 and 1 in the input box next to "Provide Your Desired Power Factor." The default value is 0.95.
- Click the "Calculate" button to perform the power factor calculation. The calculator will display the current power factor, apparent power in kilovolt-amperes (kVA), reactive power in kilovolt-amperes reactive (kVAR), and the correction capacitor value in microfarads (µF).
- To reset the calculator and start over again, click the "Reset" button.
Formulas
Here are the formulas, the above calculator used to calculate the required values,
Apparent Power (kVA):
kVA = Volt × Amp / 1000
This formula calculates the apparent power in kilovolt-amperes (kVA) by multiplying the voltage (Volt) by the current (Amp) and dividing the result by 1000.
Power Factor (pf):
pf = kW / kVA
This formula calculates the power factor (pf) by dividing the real power (kW) by the apparent power (kVA).
Reactive Power (kVAR):
kVAR = √(kVA^2 - kW^2)
This formula calculates the reactive power in kilovolt-amperes reactive (kVAR) by taking the square root of the difference between the square of the apparent power (kVA^2) and the square of the real power (kW^2).
Correction Capacitor Value (c):
c = (1000 × kVAR) / (2 × Ï€ × Hz × Volt^2)
This formula calculates the correction capacitor value (c) in microfarads (µF) by multiplying 1000 by the difference in reactive power (kVAR) and then dividing the result by 2 times π (3.14159), the frequency (Hz), and the square of the voltage (Volt^2).
