AFCI Outlet Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure
Hey, in this article we are going to see the wiring diagram of the AFCI Outlet or AFCI Receptacle and its connection procedure. AFCI and GFCI these two types of protective outlets are mostly used in domestic wirings such as home wirings. The main difference between an AFCI outlet and a GFCI outlet is AFCI trips or breaks the circuit when it detects an electrical ARC that can cause a dangerous fire and the GFCI trips or break the circuit when it detects the leakage current which means when the electric current flowing to ground exceeds a certain value. GFCI gives protection against electrical shock.
AFCI outlet is the complete set of built-in AFCI breakers with the outlet. GFCI and AFCI outlets are can be sued standalone or by connecting together also. When we interconnect both the outlets together we will get both ARC and leakage protection. AFCI outlet also has output terminals so we can connect ordinary outlets with it so the ordinary outlet also is ARC protected.
AFCI Outlet Wiring Diagram
Here, you can see the wiring diagram of the AFCI outlet with the power source and other outlets.
Connection Procedure
Standalone AFCI Outlet Connection
- Connect the line terminal of the input power supply to the upside-right terminal of the outlet.
- Connect the neutral terminal of the input power supply to the upside-left terminal of the outlet.
- Connect the ground wire to the downside ground terminal of the outlet.
AFCI Outlet Connection with External Ordinary Outlet
- Connect the line terminal of the input power supply to the upside-right terminal of the outlet.
- Connect the neutral terminal of the input power supply to the upside-left terminal of the outlet.
- Connect the ground wire to the downside ground terminal of the outlet.
- Connect the output line terminal(downside right terminal) of the AFCI Outlet to the upside right terminal(line input) of the ordinary outlet.
- Connect the output neutral terminal(downside left terminal) of the AFCI Outlet to the upside left terminal(neutral input) of the ordinary outlet.
- Connect the grounding line to the grounding terminal of the ordinary outlet also.
AFCI Outlet Connection with GFCI Outlet and Ordinary Outlet
- Use the current rating of the GFCI outlet equal to or more than the AFCI Outlet.
- The AFCI outlet must be connected before the GFCI Outlet.
- Connect the main input power supply to the input of the AFCI outlet following the above procedure.
- Connect the output of the AFCI outlet to the input of the GFCI outlet.
- Connect the output of the GFCI outlet to the input of the ordinary outlet.
In this connection, the load that will be connected to the AFCI outlet will be protected from the ARC fault only it will not be protected from the ground leakage fault. But the load that will be connected to the GFCI outlet or the ordinary outlet will be protected from the both ARC fault and the Ground leakage fault.
