AFCI Breaker Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure
Hey, in this article we are going to see the AFCI Wiring diagram and its connection procedure. AFCI means Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. It is also known as Arc Fault Detection Device or AFDD. It is basically a circuit breaker and it breaks r disconnects the circuit when it detects an arc in the circuit. ARC mainly happens due to loose connections. So AFCI breakers are used in home wiring even industrial wiring also. Here, we learn about the AFCI breaker that is mainly used in homes. An Electrical ARC is very much responsible for fire so it is very essential to install AFCI breakers in homes.
In the united states and Canadas, AFCI breakers are mostly used. Generally, they are connected with Outlets used in kitchens, bedrooms, etc. There are mainly two types of AFCI breakers mostly used - 1. Single Pole AFCI and 2. Two Pole or Double Pole AFCI. Single-pole AFCI is used for single-line terminals and two-pole AFCI is used for double-line terminals.
AFCI Breaker Wiring Diagram
Here, you can see the wiring diagram of both single pole and double AFCI breakers with outlets.
The single pole AFCI breaker has one screw-type input terminal(Line) and two screw-type output terminals (Line and neutral). Also, it has a black color built-in wire brought out from the backside of the AFCI breaker that is for neutral input.
The double pole AFCI breaker has two screw-type input terminals(both are Line) and three screw-type output terminals(two lines and one neutral). Also, it has a black color built-in wire brought out from the backside of the AFCI breaker that is for neutral input.
Connection Procedure
Single Pole AFCI Breaker Connection Procedure
- The line terminal of the input power supply is to be connected to the upside input terminal of the breaker.
- The built-in wire from the backside of the breaker is to be connected to the neutral bar.
- The downside right terminal is the line output that is connected to the line terminal of the load or outlet(here outlet connected).
- The downside left terminal is the neutral output that is connected to the neutral terminal of the load or outlet(here outlet connected).
- The earth terminal is to be connected directly to the load or outlet.
Double Pole AFCI Breaker Connection Procedure
- Both of the line terminals from the input power supply are to be connected to the upside input terminals of the AFCI breaker.
- The built-in wire from the backside of the breaker is to be connected to the neutral bar.
- The downside both the left and right terminals are for the line output that is to be connected to the line terminals of the load or outlet(here 4 prong dryer outlet is connected).
- The downside middle terminal is the neutral output that is connected to the neutral terminal of the load or outlet(here 4 prong dryer outlet).
- The earth terminal is to be connected directly to the load or outlet.
