Voltage Protection Device Wiring Diagram and Connection Procedure
Nowadays, Power fluctuation and Overvoltage faults become very important issues for sensitive devices. In the older days, we did have not so many sensitive devices and did not care about the power surge also. But nowadays, we have so many sensitive electrical and electronic devices in our homes, offices, or workplaces. A power surge and voltage fluctuation can affect very badly those devices. Voltage Protection Devic is an electrical protective device that can be used to protect our devices from power surges, voltage fluctuations, overvoltage faults, Undervoltage faults, etc.
A power surge is basically an unwanted very high voltage for a very small duration in our power system. A power surge happens due to lightning, switching, equipment failure, etc. From research, it is seen that ninety percent of power surges happen due to our internal switching. Surge protectors basically protect either by blocking those high voltage surges or by grounding them to the earth. Although most of the surge protectors used frequently work in the principle of grounding the fault current.
Surge protectors are designed in such a way that they continuously monitor the system voltage. When the system voltage is normal it allows the power supply to the load circuit but when the voltage increases it grounds the excessive voltage. But here the voltage protection device shown in the below section is different from the conventional surge protector. It shuts down the power supply when there some overvoltage or surge voltage occurs.
Wiring Diagram
Here, you can see the wiring diagram of a Voltage Protection Device in a single-phase system. It is basically used in domestic electrical systems such as homes, offices, labs, etc. Here, you can also see how it is connected to MCB and RCCB.
Connection Procedure
Before making the connection, you must select the devices with proper ratings. Here, all the devices are single-phase. You can see the voltage protection device has three terminals - Common, IN, and OUT. It is good to connect the voltage protector in the middle of MCB and RCCB. Also, remember that the MCB must be connected before the RCCB. So you can connect the MCB at first just after the power source then the voltage protector and then the RCCB.
Now, follow the below connection procedure,
- Connect the phase and neutral from the output of the power source(here from the energy meter) to the input of the MCB as shown in the wiring diagram.
- Connect the phase terminal from the output of the MCB to the voltage protector 'IN' terminal.
- And connect the neutral terminal from the output of the MCB to the voltage protector 'Common' terminal.
- Connect the input of the RCCB to the voltage protector by connecting the phase to the 'OUT' terminal and neutral to the 'Common' terminal.
- Now, you can connect the output of the RCCB to the load circuit.
