Examples of Storage Devices and Their Types
Storage Device Examples
Here is the list of common examples of storage devices,
- Compact Disk(CD)
- Digital Versatile Disk(DVD)
- Hard Disk Drives(HDD)
- Solid State Drive(SSD)
- Pen Drive/Flash Drive
- Random Acess Memory(RAM)
- Read Only Memory(ROM)
- Floppy Disk
- Cassette Tape/Audio Tape Recorder
- Magnetic Wire Recorder
- Phonograph
- Phonautograph
- Blue Ray Disc
Storage devices are those where we can store data and information for future use. Storage devices are manufactured to store data for a specific system or multipurpose use. For example, the storage device in a computer system stores the preloaded data, information, instructions, and even manually inputted data. Without any storage device a computer cannot work even if it will not be able to start also. Storage devices in a computer system are classified into two categories - primary storage and secondary storage.
Types of Storage Devices
Primary Storage Device Examples
It is a small memory size generally built with the internal CPU circuit and contains program instructions. In most of the cases, primary memory is the temporary memory and it stores instructions during program execution.
Examples of primary storage devices are,
- Cache Memory
- Registers
- RAM
- ROM
Secondary Storage Device Examples
It is a large memory that can store huge amounts of data or information for a long time. Generally, it stores data external to the computer.
Some examples of secondary storage devices are,
- Hard Disk
- SSD
- Pen Drive
- CD
- DVD
Generally, we store data in the form of electronic signals. There are two types of electronic signals - analog and digital
Analog Storage Device Examples
It stores data in the form of analog electronic signals or in another type of signal but in analog form. Examples of Analog Storage Devices are,
- Cassette Tape/Audio Tape Recorder
- Phonautograph
- Phonograph
- Magnetic Wire Recorder
- VCRs
Digital Storage Device Examples
Digital storage devices are those that store data and information in digital form. Nowadays most of the storage devices we use are digital devices.
Examples of Digital Storage Devices are,
- RAM
- ROM
- SSD
- CD
- DVD
- Hard Disk
Optical Storage Devices Example
In these devices, the data or information is stored or written using optical energy such as a LASER. Even for reading purposes also optical energy is used. Optical Storage devices are the most lightweight and simple storage devices. They are mainly used as secondary storage but they cannot use to store a large amount of data like a hard disk. A normal optical disc can store data up to 700 to 800MB of data. Some common examples of optical storage devices are,
- CD
- DVD
- Blue Ray Disc
- RDX
Magnetic Storage Device Examples
These devices use different types of magnetization techniques to store the data. The main advantage of these devices is, they can be accessed by one or more read/write heads.
Examples of magnetic storage devices are,
- Hard Disk
- Floppy Disk
- Magnetic Tape
- Magnetic Strips on debit cards, credit cards, ATM cards
