Examples of Peripheral Devices and Their Function
Here is the list of Common Examples of Peripheral Devices,
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Speaker
- Microphone
- Monitor
- Printer
- Scanner
- Game Controller
- Webcam
- Joystick
- External Drive
- Projector
- Light Pen
- Modem
- Network Adapter
A peripheral device is an internal or external auxiliary device of a computer system that is not involved in the primary operation of the computer but helps to put information into the computer or get information out of a computer. So, a peripheral may be an external device or internal device or input device or output device, or a combination of those.
Actually, the term peripheral device refers to all hardware components that are attached to a computer system and they are all controlled by the central processor of the computer.
From the aspect of attachment, there are two types of peripheral devices - 1. Internal Peripheral Device and 2. External Peripheral Device
Internal peripheral devices are mostly permanently connected and they may follow the internal protocol to communicate. The user cannot remove or replace them easily. Mainly the storage devices come in this category but other types of devices are also available. Some common examples of internal peripheral devices are,
- Internal Disk
- Internal Microphone
- Internal Speaker
- Graphics Card
External peripheral devices are mostly subjected to temporary connections. Users can plug in or plug out anytime. They may be connected through cables or wireless connection systems. Some common examples of external peripheral devices are,
- Monitor
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Joystick
- Game Controller
Now coming to the three main types of peripheral devices that are,
- Input Devices - These help to put information into the computer system
- Output Devices - These help to get the information out or display to the people from the computer
- Storage Devices - These help to store information in the computer for future use
Some common examples of input peripheral devices are,
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Microphone
- Scanner
- Joystick
- Lightpen
Some common examples of output peripheral devices are,
- Speaker
- Monitor
- Printer
- Buzzer
- Projector
Some common examples of storage peripheral devices are,
- Hard Disk(Internal or External)
- RAM(Internal)
- CD/DVD Driver(External)
- Pendrive(External)
The modern Computer system uses some other peripheral devices that can help with both input and output operations such as Modem, Network Adapters, Routers, and Webcams. These are the networking devices that help the computer system to communicate with other electronic devices through a network. They basically convert, transmit, or receive the data when a computer communicates with other computers.
Generally, the peripheral devices are designed in such a way that they can work with the same protocol and clock frequency of the central computing system. If multiple computers are built using the same technology, specification, and protocols then a particular peripheral device can be used with any of them. For example, a keyboard can be used with any version of computers of the same categories.
