How to do Wiring Lights in Series Connection? Procedure, Diagram
Hey, in this article, we are going to learn how to wire lights in a series connection, and also we will see the diagram of a series lamp connection. Light is a device that converts the electrical energy into light energy. There are different types of lights or electric bulbs are available according to their working principle, design, and properties. Anyway, there are two types of methods to connect multiple light bulbs - series connection and parallel connection. Both of the connection methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Also, they are useful for different applications. Although, in older days, the series connection is mostly used nowadays parallel connection is mostly used.
Light Wiring in Series Connection
First, let's see the basic wiring diagram of multiple lights connected in series.
Here, you can see three lights are connected in series. The phase terminal of light 1 is to be connected to the phase terminal of the power supply. The neutral terminal of the light 1 is connected to the phase terminal of the light 2. Thus light 3 is also connected. The neutral terminal of the light 3 is the final neutral of the whole circuit and it is to be connected to the neutral of the power supply. Remember that, there should be no loose contact or loose connection. For, AC lights there is no specific phase neutral identification for most of the bulbs, so any terminal can be used as phase and neutral.
Lamp Connection in Series with Switch
Here, you can see the connection diagram of multiple lamps in series with an operating switch.
Connection Procedure
1. Connect the phase terminal of the power source to any one terminal of the switch.
2. Connect the rest terminal of the switch to the phase terminal of the lamp 1.
3. Connect the neutral of the lamp 1 to the phase terminal of the lamp 2.
4. Connect the neutral terminal of the lamp 2 to the phase terminal of the lamp 3.
5. Connect the neutral of the lamp 3 to the neutral of the power source.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Series connection of light bulb
Advantages
1. Fewer wires are required for the wiring connection.
2. Only a single switch is enough for the operation of all lights.
Disadvantages
1. The voltage needs to increase if the number of bulbs is increased in a series connection.
2. A fault in any one bulb or any one location can stop the working of the whole circuit.
Series connection is the old method and is used in a specific application. In a series connection, power loss is more and there are so many difficulties in operating the lights. It does not provide high efficiency. In a series connection, a constant current always flows in the circuit. The resistance of the whole circuit depends upon each load of the circuit. The series connection of lights provides better performance if the wattage and resistance of each lamp are equal. The low resistance of any lamp in the circuit can lower the resistance of the whole circuit.
