4 Way Switch Wiring Diagram and Connection

Hey, in this article we are going to learn how to wire a 4-way switch and 4-way switch wiring connection diagram and procedure. This type of connection is required for staircase lighting, alarm systems, hotels, hostels, mesh, etc. In industrial production areas, communication systems, and notification systems, these types of connections are used. A four-way switch is not only used for lighting purposes but also used for outlet wiring, power sockets, indicator systems, etc. A four-way switch provides the facility to control electrical power from different places for a single load.

4 Way Switch Terminals

Here, you can see there is a total of five terminals of a 4-way switch.

The upper side both left and right are the terminals for power supply connection. Generally, the phase terminal is to be connected to those terminals. Just below, both left and right are the output or traveler terminals.  The left side lower terminal is for grounding or earthing purposes. The input and output terminals are used to connect to the 3-way switches, while the traveler terminals connect to other 4-way switches in the circuit. The 4-way switch acts as an intermediate switch, allowing you to control the light from multiple locations by toggling any of the switches.

Components required for 4-way switch connection

Operating from three places

1. Two number three-way switches
2. One-piece four-way switch
3. Black, white, red, and green wires
4. Lamp

Operating from four places

1. Two number three-way switches
2. Two number four-way switches
3. Black, white, red, and green wires

Procedure to wire a 4-way switch

1. Connect the ground terminal to all of the switch's ground points as shown in the above diagram and use green wire.
2. Take the white wire as a neutral wire and connect directly from the power supply to the light.
3. Take the black wire as a phase wire and connect it to the right-side lower terminal of the first three-way switch.
4. Connect the live wire of the lamp to the right side lower terminal of the last three-way switch.
5. Connect all the three switches(3-way and 4-way) to each other as shown in the above diagram.
6. Now turn on the main incoming power supply of the circuit and you can control the light from three places.

4 Way Switch Wiring Connection - Control From Four Places

According to the below diagram, you can control the light from four different places.

4-Way Switch Connection Procedure

1. Place the three-way switches at both places of the circuit and the two four-way switches should be in the middle of the two three-way switches.
2. Connect all the switches' ground terminals to the earth by a green wire as shown in the above figure.
3. Connect the neutral of the power supply and the light with a white wire.
4. Connect all the switches to each other as shown in the above figure.
5. Now, turn on the main power supply of the circuit and control(on/off) the light from four different places.

Procedure to Replace 4-Way Switch

If any switch is damaged, you can replace the switch by following the below procedure. Remember that a 4-way switch or 3-way switch does not work simply as a one-way switch. So before replacing, you must follow the below procedure,

1. Turn off the main incoming power supply of the whole circuit or disconnect.
2. Now, take a photo or keep in mind the connection of the switch which you want to replace. Color code, terminals, everything you should be noted.
3. Now disconnect all the terminals and connections from that switch.
4. Connect the new switch as the before connection.
5. Turn on the main power supply for the circuit.
6. Do the work only, if you are certified to do the electrical work.
