All Types of Inductor Symbols and Diagrams
An inductor is a very well-known passive component. An inductor is made of a coil of conductive wires. The main function of an inductor is to oppose the changes in the current flowing through it. An inductor always tries to block AC and allow DC. There are so many types of inductors available. So, in this article, we are going to see all types of inductor symbols and diagrams.
The most common types of inductor are,
- Normal Inductor
- Fixed Inductor
- Variable Inductor
- Variable Core Inductor
- Polarity Inductor
- Iron Core Inductor
- Ferrite Core Inductor
- Preset Inductor
- Shielded Inductor
- Bifilar Inductor
- Saturable Core Inductor
- Tapping Inductor

Normal Generic Inductor Symbol
Here you can see the basic symbol of inductor. It is the most common type of inductor used in most of the electrical and electronic circuits. It is very simple in design also. Before you go to know about other inductors, you must know about this, its working principle.
Symbol of Fixed Inductor
Here, you can see the symbol of Fixed Inductor. Fixed inductors are those whose inductance values cannot be changed or varied. Fixed inductors are used in electrical and electronic circuits where variable inductance is not required. These inductors are also known as the coil, choke, etc.
Variable Inductor Symbol
Here, you can see the symbol of Variable Inductor. Variable inductors are those whose inductance values can be changed or vary at any time. These types of inductors are used in electronic circuits where variable inductance is required such frequency-varying applications.

Variable Core Inductor Symbol
Here, you can see the symbol of variable core inductor.
Polarity Inductor Symbol
The symbol of polarity inductor is almost the same as the normal inductor. It has a dot sign at one side which indicates the current should be entered from this side of the inductor. This polarity is used when two inductors are used together to increase the mutual inductance.
Symbol of Iron Core Inductor
Here, you can see the Iron Core Inductor Symbol. A core is nothing but a high magnetic permeability material on which the inductive coil is wounded. It is used to increase the inductance of the inductor. The core of the iron core inductor is made of iron(ferromagnetic material).

Ferrite Core Inductor Symbol
Here, you can see the symbol of Ferrite Core Inductor. The core of the ferrite core inductor is made of ferrite material. The main advantage of ferrite material over iron is it provides high magnetic permeability but a very low electrical conductance. So, this increases the chances of low electrical power loss.
Symbol of Preset Inductor
Here, you can see the preset inductor symbol. Preset inductors are also variable inductor but their inductance value cannot be changed during the operation. The inductance value of the preset inductance can be changed or varied during the manufacturing of the circuit only. Once a value is set, it should be constant during the operation.
Symbol of Shielded Inductor
Here, you can see the shielded inductor symbol. Shielded inductors are those, whose coils are placed inside the core. This technique is because the magnetic flux produced by the inductor cannot interface with the other nearest component. This type of inductor is used in compact circuits.

Bifilar Inductor Symbol
Here, you can see the symbol of bifilar inductor. The coil of the Bifilar inductor is made by two parallel conductors.
Symbol of Saturable Core Inductor
Here, you can see the saturable core inductor symbol.
