[Proper] Two Way Switch Connection Diagram and Wiring
Hey, in this article we are going to see the Two Way Switch Connection Diagram and Wiring. We know there are a lot of applications of two-way switches such as in staircase lighting connections, bedroom lighting connections, and other places. There are three procedures or methods for the connection of a two-way switch. So, we will see all three methods or procedures. Generally, the main purpose of using a two-way switch is to control a load from two different places. Mostly, the light controlling purpose it is used.
Two-Way Switch Terminals
The two-way switch is nothing but a single-pole double-through switch. The two-way switch has a total of three terminals named L1, L2, and the common terminal. The upper and lower terminals are named as Traveler Terminals(L1, L2). The middle terminal is known as common.
When wiring a two-way switch, one end of the circuit (usually the power source) is connected to the common terminal of the first switch. Then, the traveler terminals of the first switch are connected to the traveler terminals of the second switch. Finally, the common terminal of the second switch is connected to the load (light fixture).
There are two positions to operate the two-way switch. In, position 1, the common terminal is connected to terminal L1, and in position 2, the common terminal is connected to terminal L2.
Two-Way Switch Connection: Methode 1
Connection Procedure
1. Connect the L1 terminal of both switches together.
2. Connect the L2 terminal of both switches together.
3. Connect the common terminal of switch 1 to the phase or live terminal of the power supply.
4. Connect the common terminal of switch 2 to anyone terminal of the light.
5. Connect the rest terminal of the light to the neutral terminal of the power supply.
Finally, cross-check your whole circuit with the above diagram, if all the connections are
Operation of the Circuit
When the common terminal of both switches is connected to the terminal L1, then the light will glow.
When the common terminal of both switches is connected to terminal L2, the light will glow.
When the common terminal of switch 1 is connected to L1 and the common terminal of switch 2 is connected to L2, the light will not glow.
When the common terminal of switch 1 is connected to L2 and the common terminal of switch 2 is connected to L1, the light will not glow.
Connection of Two-Way Switch: Methode 2
Connection Procedure
1. Connect common terminals of both switches together.
2. Connect the L1 terminal of both switches to the phase or live terminal of the power supply.
3. Connect the L2 terminal of both switches to any one terminal of the lamp.
4. Connect the rest terminal of the lamp to the neutral terminal of the power supply.
Finally, review your connection with the above connection diagram.
Operation of the Circuit
When the common terminal of switch 1 is connected to L1 and the common terminal of switch 2 is connected to the L2, the light will glow.
When the common terminal of switch 1 is connected to L2 and the common terminal of switch 2 is connected to the L1, the light will glow.
But, when the common terminal of both switches is connected to the L1 terminal, the light will not glow.
When the common terminal of both switches is connected to the L2 terminal, the light will not glow.
