Resistance and Reluctance Difference, Properties, Unit

Hey, in this article we are going to discuss the difference between Resistance and Reluctance. Also, we will discuss the properties and the unit of reluctance and resistance. Here, your all doubts about Magnetic Reluctance will be cleared. Actually, there is no useful meaning or advantages of the comparison between Resistance and Reluctance it only helps to easily understand the concept of Magnetic Reluctance.

Difference between Resistance and Reluctance

What is Resistance?

The property of an object or any material by virtue of which it opposes the flow of electric current flowing through that object is called Resistance. So, Resistance is nothing but the physical property of an object.

Resistance is a very important concept in the electrical circuit. Every object or material has resistance property. In fact, according to resistance property, there are three types of material - 1. Conductor 2. Semiconductor and 3. Insulator

The object or material has a very high resistance is called Insulator.
And the object or material has a very low resistance is called Conductor.
The object or material has medium resistance property is called a semiconductor.

Properties of Resistance

1. Resistance is the physical property of an object or material.

2. The resistance property of an object also depends on its size. Generally, the resistance is directly proportional to the length and inversely proportional to the cross-sectional area.

3. The resistance property of a material also depends upon the temperature also.

4. Resistance property does not change with the characteristics of power supply such as direct current or alternating current.

What is Reluctance?

In simple words, Reluctance is the property or any obstruction of opposition to the conduction of magnetic flux. Magnetic Reluctance is analogous to Electrical Resistance.
When a magnetic coil produces some magnetic flux then it conducts up to a certain area around that coil. Magnetic flux can be conducted through the air or any object(ferromagnetic material). The reluctance of the air gap is high than an object.

Reluctance also is defined as the ratio of Magneto Motive Force(MMF) to the Magnetic Flux.

Properties of Magnetic Reluctance

1. It is the property of an object or obstruction to the opposition of magnetic flux.

2. It depends upon the composition and geometry of the object.

3. Magnetic Reluctance changes with the hysteresis loss of the object.

Comparison between Resistance and Reluctance

1. The main difference between resistance and Reluctance is, Resistance is a property of an object which opposes the flow of current whereas Reluctance is a property of an object or obstruction of a medium that opposes the flow or conduction of magnetic flux.

2. The unit of resistance is Ohm and it is denoted by 'R'. On the other hand, the unit of reluctance is Inverse Henry(H−1) and it is denoted by 'S'

3. The resistance properties of an object vary with the varying temperature, whereas the properties of reluctance not so much change with the temperature.

4. In the case of an Air medium, the resistance is infinity means no current can flow through the air, but the reluctance of an air medium is higher than an object but not infinity, which means magnetic flux can conduct or flow through the air medium.

5. Another important difference between resistance and reluctance is, resistance property of an object produces heat when it opposes the flow of current but Reluctance does not produce any heat when it opposing the magnetic flux.

6. The resistance property does not change with the pulsating DC or AC supply, whereas reluctance also pulsates with the pulsating DC or AC.

7. The resistance property opposes the flow of current and creates electrical power loss whereas reluctance opposes the magnetic flux but it does not create a magnetic loss.
