Enhancement VS Depletion MOSFET Advantages, Applications



In this article, we are going to discuss the difference between Depletion MOSFET and Enhancement MOSFET in a detailed explanation. They are also known as D-MOSFET(Depletion MOSFET) and E-MOSFET(Enhancement MOSFET). Both the D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET have their own advantages, disadvantages, and applications. So we will know all of these with the Enhancement and Depletion MOSFET Difference. The full form of MOSFET is the Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. It is a power electronic semiconductor switching device. MOSFET is a type of insulated gate field effect transistor means its gate terminal is fully insulated. It is a voltage-controlled device.

Constructional Difference between Depletion and Enhancement MOSFET

Differences between Depletion MOSFET and Enhancement MOSFET



There is not so much difference in the construction of Enhancement and Depletion MOSFET. You can see in the above diagram, the depletion MOSFET has a permanent fabricated channel between the Source and Drain but in the enhancement MOSFET, there is no channel. It is the only constructional difference between D-MOSFET and E-MOSFET.



Characteristics Differences between Depletion MOSFET and Enhancement MOSFET


Enhancement MOSFET

Depletion MOSFET

It is Normally OFF device at zero Gate to Source voltage

It is Normally ON device at zero Gate to Source voltage

At OFF condition it cannot conduct electrical current.

At OFF condition it can conduct electrical current.

Positive gate voltage (more than source voltage) is required to turn on this type of MOSFET

Negative gate voltage(less than threshold voltage) is required to turn off this type of MOSFET

In this type of MOSFET, the gate voltage is directly proportional to the Drain Current.

In this type of MOSFET, the gate voltage is Inversely proportional to the Drain Current.

There is no permanent channel; a temporary channel is produced when a voltage is applied across it.

There is a permanent fabricated channel available. Generally, the N-type channel

Enhancement MOSFET has leakage current and diffusion current concepts.

Depletion MOSFET does not have any leakage current or diffusion current concept.

The advantage of Enhancement MOSFET is ultra-fast switching capability with high current conduction.

The advantage of Depletion MOSFET is, it can be used as a variable resistive load.




Applications of Depletion MOSFET


1. The Depletion MOSFETs are normally ON condition at zero Gate to Source Voltage. This means in normal conditions it can conduct current. So this type of MOSFET is used as a Load Resistor in digital logic circuits.

2. Depletion MOSFETs are also used for start-up purposes in auxiliary power supply circuits.

3. They are used in PWM ICs used for flyback circuits.

4. They are used in Linear regulator circuits and constant current source circuits as pass transistors.

5. Depletion types MOSFET is also used in Solid State Relays, Telecom Switches, etc.

6. They are also used in LED Array Driver Circuit, Voltage Sweeping Circuits, Current Monitor Circuits, etc.



Applications of Enhancement MOSFET


1. Enhancement MOSFETs are mostly used for electronic switching circuits.

2. They are used in Power electronics ICs, Motor Driver ICs, and Digital Controller ICs.

3. Enhancement MOSFETs are used in inverter circuits, amplifier circuits, etc.

4. They are used in modern processors and digital circuits for fast switching and low power consumption
